Despite all its advantages of modern life leaves a lot to be desired. We spend our time enduring the ever increasing load of work in the city of oppressive unfriendliness, the daily commuter grind and the aggressive reality of impatient road-ragers.

Something missing?

Unfortunately, the work is a reality for most of us. So, too, the urban and suburban living, dreary weather, pollution, traffic … But this should not be all that to life. Try something that puts you in touch with who you really. Try something simple. Try something that soothes the soul.

Try Fraser Island.

Fraser Island is not just an island paradise. This is a unique and luxurious combination of Australia’s rich natural heritage, its earthy roots, its full grandeur, and its refreshingly simple Essentials. This is an opportunity to touch the fine sands, to drift in the temperate water, to bask in the sun, it seems that all of your … This is your chance to take part in the life that most Australians have not forgotten.

Spend a week in the turquoise waters, a week without shoes with the sand between the toes, a week fishing and perhaps living out of their catch. Your point of view, can not change.

This is not just fleeting pleasure. This is what you take with you.

Fraser can help remind you that you do not work. What are the forms and registration, meetings and memorandums? You can learn a lot about yourself when you take away all the things that have no meaning.

Indeed … is there a better way to experience this Epiphany, than in paradise?

Fraser Island is certainly a paradise, no matter how you look at it. At the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a short boat from Hervey Bay in South-East Queensland, Fraser is 124 km from the tip of a finger, and at 16 km in the middle. At 163,000 hectares, is the world’s largest sand island.

Of course, this does not mean that all just sand. Not long shot! The entire island laced with crystal clear fresh water stream, and the deep midnight blue freshwater lakes. In fact, with more than 40 fresh water lakes – it is home to half of the known world ’situated’ Lakes. She also has a dazzling diversity of plants and animals (including Australia’s purest strain of dingo), as well as an amazing variety of spectacular landscapes, from 120 km non-stop tropical beach with a dense and towering rainforest, weathered cape to protect the gorge, inspiring rock wandering dunes, eerie mangroves to wind-blown salt PANS.

Moreover, you have a choice of housing, so that you can choose your own level of “communion with nature.” From 4 ½ star luxury resorts to rental retreats to motels and units, up to the well “OLE campsite. If you are a sucker for a little pampering, or you are perfectly at home with tents and a campfire on the beach, Fraser is the provider.

And great accommodation just the beginning … There is an average temperature of 29 ° C in summer and 22 ° C in winter, it is not surprising that in the open air are high on the agenda. Adrenalin addicts and dedicated sunbathers so appreciate the wide range available. From dawn till dusk (and beyond), there is always something for everyone. The only problem is choosing! Fishing, 4 wheel driving, restaurants, swimming, bird-watching, Bush walking, swimming, eating, whale and dolphin-watching, shipwreck exploration, nutrition, beauty therapy, massage, lazing in the sun, eat, beach volleyball

, tennis, cricket , eating, canoeing, sailboarding, snorkelling, fir … And it goes without saying that a few quiet drinks might make their way into the agenda, and …

With so much to offer, it is not surprising that Fraser Island was known as K’gari – or heaven ‘- the local Aboriginal people.

Fraser Island is certainly a “paradise for all!

Four-wheel Driving

A sand island, the only mode of land transport is 4WD. Of course, for many visitors that the main attraction. 4WD enthusiasts from all over the world visit Fraser Island to pit and their vehicles with regard to the relief found on the island. The hard-packed sea to move to the dune forests of the interior, Fraser Island is the ideal 4WD location.

Do not worry, though – that’s not all about extreme driving for experts! If you are a beginner, or you simply prefer a more leisurely pace of life, you will find a much more sedate satisfaction in one of the many organized 4WD tours offered around the island. Or if you just want to get to your, you can hire a 4WD for a day, and engage in a bit of quiet study.

Regardless of which option you choose, there are some ‘rules’ you should observe. Think of the dangers of driving on the beach. The further you adventure from the shoreline, with soft sand. In soft sand, the more likely it is you need to get into trouble. Generally speaking, keep your speed down, and you may remember, in the List of World Heritage listed environment … so be careful.

Fishing

No island holiday would be complete without a lazy day or two spent fishing. Beach fishing is a big drawcard for Fraser Island. And with 150 km of ocean beach to choose from, why not be? Middle Rocks, Sandy Cape, Waddy Point, and seventy-five mile beach, only a few choice seats for you, finally, to get the best of ‘that which was for’.

In the famous’ Tailor run ‘occurs on the eastern (ocean) side of the island between July and October of each year. In the fishing world, this time – known as “The Tailor of season ‘- a much anticipated event, with huge schools of big fish working the beaches. But if you can not do so during the late winter and early spring, rest assured, tailor season only one date to mark on your calendar. On the western side of Fraser has been known to reward the odd angler with a fine bag of bream, whiting and flathead.

New Providence Island is home to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas and by far its largest city. Nassau was first settled in the 1600’s and is rich with history, including plenty of genuine pirates. Nassau has some beautiful colonial architecture, and on the outskirts, a strip of high-rise hotels and casinos along Cable Beach. Paradise Island, connected to New Providence by a bridge, is home to the gargantuan Atlantis resort with its shark pools and water slides. New Providence offers golf, tennis, diving, fishing charters, gambling, night life, sight-seeing, and cultural activities.

Half a century ago, Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is located, was almost uninhabited. Today, its port is one of the largest in the hemisphere, and the city of 50,000 is well known as a resort and cruise-ship destination. The tourism center is Port Lucaya, which features a large marina, high-rise beach resorts, shopping, and dining. Unlike New Providence, the island of Grand Bahama has less populated regions as well, with deserted beaches and tropical pine forests. The Lucayan National Park includes a nature preserve and vast underwater cave system.

The Abacos, the acknowledged sailing capital of the Bahamas, are among the world’s most beautiful cruising grounds. Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco is a major boat-charter center as well as a base for diving and deep-sea fishing. The Abacos were settled by Loyalists who fled New England after the Revolutionary War, and the islands are known for their Cape-Cod-style houses with clapboard siding and picket fences. To contrast its quaint villages, Abaco has several major resorts complete with championship golf courses and acres of condominiums.

The Exumas are a chain of over 300 islands and cays. Aside from Great and Little Exuma, which are the two largest, most are uninhabited—and that’s half the fun. Like the Abacos, the Exumas are wonderful cruising grounds. The largest settlement is George Town on Great Exuma, a village of 1000 souls with a fine harbor. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea National Park, at the north of the chain, is popular with divers, and even has a few nature trails for landlubbers. Exuma also has several major resorts, including the Four Seasons at Emerald Bay.

Hemingway’s famous “Island in the stream,” Bimini lies in the Gulf Stream, just 50 miles from the east coast of Florida. Hemingway helped make it famous as a center of deep-sea fishing, and it remains so to this day. Bimini—which is actually two islands and a number of cays–is also a popular cruising ground, and the main settlement, Alice Town, caters to the yachting crowd. Bimini has one major resort, Bimini Bay, but is otherwise still very rustic. Bimini’s other claim to fame is Bimini Road, a highway of stone in twenty feet of water that some believe is a remnant of the lost city of Altantis.

With sixty miles of beaches and only a few dozen hotel rooms, Eleuthera is a paradise for beach lovers who enjoy privacy and unspoiled natural beauty. Eleuthera is an island of rolling green hills and sleepy villages. The guidebooks are fond of noting that Eleuthera has not a single traffic light, but that isn’t surprising when you consider that most of it has only one road. Needless to say, there is little need for a map, and on an island less than a mile wide for long stretches, you’re never far from the beach.

Andros is by far the largest of the Bahamian islands, with an area of 2300 square miles. The interior, said to be the largest still-unexplored landmass in the world, is home to six-foot iguanas and the rare Bahamian boa constrictor. Sasquatch has not been sighted, but only because no one has braved the iguanas and boas to look for him. The east coast of the island, the only populated area, has scattered villages and miles of beautiful beaches. Just offshore is Andros’s other great attraction, a vast barrier reef—the second largest in the world.

Long Island is one of the few Bahamian islands which does not depend primarily on tourism. Fishing, and to a lesser extent agriculture, still predominate. The island was settled by American Loyalists from the South, who came with their slaves and established plantations. The soil would not support large-scale farming, however, and the plantations were gradually abandoned. Their ruins can still be seen. Long Island is also home to Dean’s Blue Hole, one of the deepest in the world and a spectacular sight with its high cliff walls.

Fifty miles long and with a population of 1600, Cat Island is a place for people who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of, for example, rural North Dakota. Cat has many miles of deserted, pink-sand beaches, and a central ridge that reaches 200 feet, the highest elevation in the Bahamas. A monastery known as the Hermitage, hand-built by an Anglican clergyman turned Catholic priest, is located atop the peak. Aside from heaven itself, a hermit could hardly have found a better place for peace and quiet.

Columbus made his first landfall in the new world on the Bahamian island of San Salvador. There are four monuments to the event scattered about this lonely island of 1000 souls. The interior of San Salvador is taken up largely by salt lakes and marshes, and the only road follows the circumference of the island. San Salvador is almost entirely surrounded by a reef and has some of the best diving in the Bahamas, including cave diving and wreck diving. The beaches are also excellent. The island is home to the Bahamas’ only Club Med, a vast resort of 200 rooms, one of the most luxurious in the Club Med chain.

“From the bustling city of Santiago, with its backdrop of mountains, to the wilds of Patagonia and west to the quite wonderful isolation of Easter Island, Chile offers a fantastically diverse and dramatic landscape,” reports Nick Laing, Chairman of Steppes Travel.

At over 2,600 miles long and stretching from the chilly seas of the south Pacific to the heat of the tropics it is hardly surprising that Chile encompasses such dramatic variations. My whirlwind trip took me from the cosmopolitan, bustling city of Santiago, with its backdrop of mountains, south to the wilds of Patagonia, north to the dryness of the Atacama and then west to the quite wonderful isolation of Easter Island.

t the southern end of Chile lies the wild, windswept, flat, barren expanse of Patagonia. Once heavily forested all that remains now is the odd clump of stunted beach trees, bent and sculpted by the wind. The rest has become a huge grazing area for sheep, beef and horses split into estancias ranging from 7 – 50,000 acres. But within this otherwise desolate land lie some intriguing areas and none more beautiful than the Torres del Paine national park. Covering an area of 600,000 acres this UNESCO biosphere reserve rises from a myriad of turquoise, ultramarine and grey lakes to the dramatic heights of the Torres Del Paine from which the park takes its name. Essentially an outdoor activity destination, my days were spent on easy walks beside blue glaciers or to catch the tantalising glimpse of soaring peaks. An afternoon of riding found muscles that were long forgotten although the BBQ that followed had beef that would convert a vegetarian. Mountain biking and fishing (at the right time of year) were also available.

A flight via Santiago took me to the opposite end of the country to the Atacama. The driest, highest desert in the world where I again stayed at the Explora Hotel, an oasis of comfort. Days were spent exploring, although the spa and pools were a tempting distraction. Mountain biking in a variety of terrains and long drives which took us to over 13,000ft where remote lakes reflected the ever changing colours of the surrounding peaks. The local village of San Pedro de Atacama is a back packer haven and consequently little cafés had sprung up serving delicious cheap food. In the evenings we were taken out to the salt lake to watch the sun transform the mountains from rich red to deep purple and, as the last rays flickered, so the flamingos glided in silently to begin their nocturnal feed.

Back to Santiago and the 5 hour flight to Easter Island. It might sound like an unnecessary addition but do not be discouraged. It is worth every minute of the journey. Smaller than the Isle of Wight, looking like the west coast of Scotland and dominated by three extinct volcanoes, it retains a magic that is hard to pinpoint. Populated by a fun loving Polynesian people who migrated around the 5th century AD, the small town has plenty of small bars and restaurants. The highlight, of course, are the moai, the extraordinary statues standing some 30ft tall representing the ancestors of the people. There are long easy walks to be had along the cliff tops or up to the crater edge. Toppled moai are everywhere, a testament to the inter clan fighting which destroyed this culture somewhere in the 12th century. I loved it.

My final half day was spent on a walking tour in the port of Valparaiso, about an hour from Santiago airport. We passed brightly painted houses clad in corrugated iron and vibrant street art (now the subject of a book), rode a 19th century funicular (there are 6) which still serve the city, visited museums and ended with a really delicious lunch. Valparaiso is just emerging as the trendy place to live and consequently has an excitement to it. It is also well located for visits to several excellent vineyards.
